EDITORIAL
The first issue of Distance Running Results for 2008 catches up with results of races held over the Christmas period. I would like to wish all readers of DRR a wonderful 2008; may the year be an improvement, athletics-wise, on 2007.
Former SA marathon record holder Mark Plaatjes ran in the Western Cape over the holiday period; he was 17th in the South Easter 15 km and is also believed to have run the Tokai Manor House race, although his name does not appear in the results.
British junior Abby Wilson was quite busy in Western Cape road races; she won the Runners’ Memorial and Tokai races, was second in the Poppy Run, and placed third in the South Easter and Sundowner events.
Wayne Gallant and Charné Bosman started the year with a bang when they won the Woodlands Dairy First Choice Half Marathon in Jeffreys Bay in 65:09 and 75:48 respectively.
Internationally, Zhang Yingying of China ran a world junior marathon record in the Xiamen International Marathon only one day after turning 18 – a superb 2:22:38 to shatter Liu Min's mark from the Chinese National Games in 2001. It was also a course record. The versatile Zhang aslo has Olympic Games "A" standard times for the 5000 m and 10000 m, so it is not clear which event she will run in the Beijing Olympics. Sun Yingjie, in her comeback race afer a doping suspension, finished a distant 13th.
The list leaders published at the end of this issue will be the last for 2007; from next week the 2008 list leaders will be included.

NEWS
LEL AND WAMI ARE MARATHONERS OF THE YEAR
Martin Lel (Kenya) and Gete Wami (Ethiopia) were selected as Marathoners of the Year by Race Results Weekly (RRW). The rankings are based on key victories, head-to-head competition, fast times, consistent performances in multiple races and, “in some cases, heroic efforts”.
South Africa’s Hendrick Ramaala was ranked seventh. In his two top performances of the year Ramaala, a former New York City Marathon winner, placed third in the ING New York City Marathon and fifth in the Flora London Marathon. In between he was a disappointing 27th in the World Championships.
RRW Editor and Publisher David Monti called Lel a clear choice after his wins in London and New York, something no other man has ever accomplished. But it was much closer on the women’ side between Wami and China’s Zhou Chunxia.
Lel, 29, was “simply flawless” over the 42.195 km distance in 2007. At the Flora London Marathon on a warm April day, he bided his time until the final 300 meters where he unleashed a sprint which Abderrahim Goumri, Felix Limo and Jaouad Gharib simply couldn’t match. Then at the ING New York City Marathon in November Lel covered every surge the pack threw at him until he had left all of his rivals, but Goumri, behind. Again, he timed his sprint to perfection, pulling away from the Moroccan for the second time this year in the final meters of a marathon.
Haile Gebrselassie was given the #2 ranking for his spectacular world record run in Berlin last September, clocking 2:04:26 and slicing 29 seconds off of Paul Tergat’s previous standard which had stood since 2003. In his other marathon at London, Gebrselassie failed to finish. Goumri got the #3 ranking for finishing second at both London and New York (he was beaten only by Lel), while world champion Luke Kibet of Kenya was #4, and Paris Marathon champion and world championships silver medalist Mubarak Hassan Shami of Qatar was ranked #5.
The 33 year-old Wami ran three marathons in the World Marathon Majors series last year, winning at Berlin, and finishing second at both London and New York. She recorded three of the top 8 times in the world, and clinched the first-ever World Marathon Majors series title.
“While it is true that Zhou beat her in London with a very fast time and won the silver medal at the World Championships, taken as a whole Wami’s record was slightly more impressive,” according to RRW. “To run three high level marathons in one year with a slowest time of 2:23:32 and never finishing lower than second is amazing.”
Zhou, whose 2:20:38 winning time at London was the 2007 world leader, was ranked second, while Britain’s Paula Radcliffe was ranked #3 for her front-running victory at the ING New York City Marathon. Reigning Olympic gold medalist Mizuki Noguchi of Japan was ranked #4 for her impressive solo victory at Tokyo in 2:21:37, the second-fastest time of the year, and Catherine Ndereba of Kenya was ranked #5 for her dramatic victory at the IAAF World Championships in very hot and humid conditions.
Also of note was the inclusion of Reiko Tosa of Japan who was given the #9 ranking. Tosa put in a heroic performance under tremendous pressure on the final day of the IAAF World Championships in Osaka last August, giving Japan their only medal in the championships.
The full rankings are: MEN – 1. Martin Lel (KEN), 2. Haile Gebrselassie (ETH), 3. Abderrahim Goumri (MAR), 4. Luke Kibet (KEN), 5. Mubarak Hassan Shami (QAT), 6. Jaouad Gharib (MAR), 7. Hendrick Ramaala (RSA), 8. Wilfred Kigen (KEN), 9. Joshua Chelanga (KEN), 10. Samuel Wanjiru (KEN). WOMEN – 1. Gete Wami (ETH), 2. Zhou Chunxiu (CHN), 3. Paula Radcliffe (GBR), 4. Mizuki Noguchi (JPN), 5. Catherine Ndereba (KEN), 6. Jelena Prokupchuka (LAT), 7. Lydia Girgoryeva (RUS), 8. Salina Kosgei (KEN), 9. Reiko Tosa (JPN), 10. Yumiko Hara (JPN).
RRW also selected Runners of the Year, and here the choice fell on Bernard Lagat (USA) and Lornah Kiplagat (NED) for their gold medal and record-setting perforances at the IAAF World Athletics, Cross-country and Road Running Championships last year.
Lagat, 33, became the first man ever to win the 1500 and 5000 meters at the same World Championships. He ran five races over nine days, taking his titles in sprint finishes and breaking a 99-year middle distance gold medal drought for his adopted nation. Not since Mel Sheppard won the Olympic title in London in 1908 has an American man won a world or Olympic 1500m title.
According to RRW Kiplagat’s achievements were altogether different than Lagat’s, but were just as compelling. The 33-year-old athlete returned to the country of her birth last March to contest the IAAF World Cross-country Championships in the brutal heat and humidity of Mombassa, and handily defeated the likes of Tirunesh Dibaba and Meselech Melkamu. Taking the lead from the gun, she won by an improbable 24 seconds.
The Dutchwoman solidified her selection as Runner of the Year with an electrifying performance at the IAAF World Road Running Championships in Udine, Italy, last October. Never content just to win a race, Kiplagat overwhelmed her rivals, setting world records for 20 km (en route, 1:02:57) and the half marathon (1:06:25), gapping the field at the finish line by nearly the same margin as at World Cross-country.
Kiplagat also won several important invitational road races, including the World’s Best 10 km (where she defeated Defar by over a minute), and the NYRR New York Mini 10 km (where she recorded her fourth title). A calf strain kept her out of the IAAF World Championships in Osaka where she had planned to run the 10000 m.
KENYAN VIOLENCE TOUCHES TOP ATHLETES
The violence in Kenya following the country’s election has affected many athletes – some of them among the world’s elite – in the central African nation, with the most tragic news the death of Lucas Sang, an Olympic 400m runner, who was hacked to death, his body burned. Lornah Kiplagat and her husband and manager, Pieter Langerhorst, struggled to defend their High Altitude Training Center in Iten, not far from Eldoret.
World marathon champion Luke Kibet suffered a head wound which required hospitalization when he was struck by a stone tossed by an angry mob outside of Eldoret, his Dutch manager Frans Denissen reported according to Race Results Weekly.
"On 29th of December at about 1 p.m., near Eldoret town, Kibet, who was walking along the road with two other men, was hit by one of the stones thrown by a group of about 50 young Kikuyus," Denissen wrote in an e-mail message. "That caused a deep head wound, which has been sewed up that afternoon in a local hospital. Also a light brain shock was diagnosed."
"The doctor has forbidden him to train for the coming two weeks," wrote Denissen. "That is why Kibet's participation in Egmond Half Marathon in the Netherlands on 13 January had to be cancelled."
Kibet, 24, the #4-ranked marathoner in the world last year according to the Race Results Weekly rankings, is also scheduled to run the Flora London Marathon on 13 April. He is in a three-way tie for fourth place in the 2007/2008 World Marathon Majors points race with 25 points.
World marathon championships bronze medalist Viktor Röthlin of Switzerland was able to exit safely his winter training base in Eldoret and make it home to Europe but not without some difficulty.
"After a few horrible days and a long day at the Eldoret Airport I finally could get a flight to Nairobi and came back yesterday," Röthlin wrote in a text message to Race Results Weekly.
Röthlin, 33, normally trains in Eldoret in the winter with Martin Lel and a group of other athletes managed by Federico Rosa, his Italian agent. He was there to prepare for next month's Tokyo International Marathon when the violence broke out. Now he's not not sure where he will finish his preparations for the 17 February race.
Röthlin, the Swiss marathon record-holder with a 2:08:20 personal best, has performed very well in his last two major championships. In 2006 he challenged Italy's Stefano Baldini at the European Championships marathon before finishing second. In Osaka last August he rallied from fifth place at 40 km to make the podium, the first-ever medal by a Swiss athlete in a World Championships marathon.
END OF THE ROAD FOR TOKYO WOMEN'S MARATHON
One of the world's most prestigious marathons, the Tokyo International Women's Marathon, will be discontinued after its 30th edition in November, according to Race Results Weekly.
Along with the all-women's marathons in Osaka and Nagoya, Tokyo has reliably served as a selection race for Japanese World Championship and Olympic teams, and has showcased some of history's greatest women runners. The race's list of winners reads like a who's-who of women's marathon running, including many Olympic medalists like Katrin Dörre (three wins), Rosa Mota, Valentina Yegorova (two wins), Derartu Tulu, Joyce Chepchumba, Naoko Takahashi and Mizuki Noguchi. Noguchi won the 2007 edition last November in a course record 2:21:37, qualifying for the Beijing Olympics.
Speculation that the race was being discontinued so that it could be combined with the Tokyo International Marathon, which is held in February and has an elite men's field plus a mass entry of 30 000 runners, turned out to be false.
Asahi Shimbun, a large Japanese newspaper and one of the organisers of the marathon, would still like to see an all-women's marathon under their sponsorship, and will try to get a new women's-only marathon off the ground after 2009.

Countries without any qualified athletes may enter their best male athlete and their best female athlete for one event each, with the exception of the combined events, 10000m and steeplechase. As host nation Germany is entitled to enter one athlete or relay team per event regardless of entry standard. Reigning world champions are entitled to be entered whether or not he/she has achieved the corresponding entry standard. Athletes must reach the qualification standards from 1 January 2008 (1 September 2007 for marathon, combined events and walks) until 3 August 2009.
Performances achieved in mixed events between male and female participants, held completely in the stadium, will not normally be accepted, nor will wind-assisted performances or hand timed marks in 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 100 m/110 m hurdles, 400 m hurdles and 4x100 m.
Indoor performances for all field events and for races of 400 m and longer will be accepted (but not on oversized tracks).
Athletes who place in the first 20 of the Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London and New York City Marathons will be considered as having achieved the A standard.
For the marathon and 50 km walk, senior athletes only (aged 20 and over on 31 December 2009) will be accepted and junior athletes (18 or 19 on 31 December 2009) may compete in any other event. Youth athletes (16 or 17 on 31 December 2009) may compete in any event except the men's throws, decathlon, 10000 m, marathon and walks. Athletes younger than 16 on 31 December 2009 cannot be entered in any event.

SOUTH AFRICAN ROAD LIST LEADERS FOR 2007
In this section I list the best South African performance this year for each of the age categories over the distances recognised by the IAAF for record purposes. Note that the categories are not closed as is the practice in races, i.e. athletes are included in younger age categories if their times qualify. Changes from the previous list are shown in red. Please send me any amendments. World leaders are shown in the senior category, on a light green background. – Ed.
